I played that for around a year, including all their closed and open Betas. I am not surprised to see it going F2P. Incidentally, I played on the US servers to play with friends of mine.
While it was fun and enjoyable on some levels, it was still a very grindy game (like all or most Korean games), with a very bad "effort vs reward" design (which even included their blasted crafting system).
Add to that a stupid, global PK system where lower levels got insta-gibbed by higher levels everywhere; and a lack-luster end game that was PVP focused only.
Killing one normal mob was a challenge too and took a bloody long time; sometimes taking on 2 mobs often meant death lol
These things made a lot of people (including me and all my friends) leave the game.
And I think by the time they realised this was not Korea and that they should tailor the game more for the Western market, it was a bit too late.
I think the population has been declining to the point where it forced them to go F2P, in hopes of attracting people again.
It's a shame really; the game was fun, the animation and environments amazing. So much potential wasted.

Have to 100% agree with you, thats the reason I quit. I think aerial pvp was fun and game had good potention, but that awful grind ruined it all. Also IMO PVP wasen't really balanced.. besides that every siege was like a lagfest...

I loved Aion intensively for about 3 months. Fave memory: The arial combat which is/was very hard but rewarding, when I infrequently won. My first experience was getting annihilated by two lvl 50's who descended on me from above. This pretty much describes my pvp experience in Aion.
What did the game in for me was how totally gear orientated it was and how so many people had twinked their alts with +10's on all the gear in order to farm noobs like me who joined the game a year after its release. There were areas I just didn't go as it got boring quick being killed repeatedly in ridiculously unfair fights. I'm ok with fights that are unfair, but impossible is not cool.
Don't mention the 'G' word.
I liked the crafting system even if it had a low reward. As far as I could tell quite a bit of the gear you could make, eventually, was pretty good.
I also ended up playing the AH and became quite rich. By then though the game had lost its glow. Have tried it again since it went f2p. It was a 'Meh' experience. I want to play GW2!
Aion is so . . . yesterday ;-p

I played this for a few weeks after it went F2P...have to say it impressed me for the little time I played it. Wish I'd continued to play Aion for free instead of paying for TERA D;
