Ventrilo MSG: Syncronizing

Hi,

I have just install Ventrilo and when trying to connect to the Imperium Server I get the message MSG: Sycnchronizing, according to google it could be caused either by the Firewall on my PC or the one built into my router, has anyone else had this problem when trying to connect and know how to fix it?

I recently found Overwolf (http://www.overwolf.com/) which I find very useful when game and thought I would share with you all.

It allows you to do the following and more while in your game

Access a Web browser (window opens without having to go back to your desktop)
Send messages to MSN, Facebook, Twitter etc...
Take Screenshots
Record Videos
See FPS

and various other features.

on their website they have a list of games that it supports, but I have yet to find any game it doesn't work with.

Raid Tanking Guide

Welcome to my tanking guide. Originally I wrote this last year for my old guild's forums, but since then my knowledge has expanded significantly about my role.

I've had a lot of experience tanking in a raid environment; from Vanilla WoW "wait for Sunders!" tanking, to Burning Crusade Paladin AOE, and even meat shielding in the PvP environment of Warhammer Online - tanking in raids is very demanding, and learning to do so properly takes a long time practicing. As main tank, your raid adapts itself to accomodate your tanking, and as such, playing with new people as a tank, or a new tank as a raid can often be a learning curve for both parties.

This guide will hopefully explain what it means to be a good tank.

Tanking 101

At its most basic level, a tank has to:
+ Keep aggro by generating threat on enemies, drawing their fire away from party members.

A good tank will do that, and:
+ Maintain solid defences in order to reduce incoming damage and minimise the ammount of healing you require in order to sustain the mana of your healers.
+ Optimise his rotation through macros to increase both his and the DPS of his party/raid.
+ Be constantly aware of taking "unnecessary damage" from ground AOE or "fire".
+ Give the rest of your raid an easy time.

Here are the top 10 tanking tricks that everyone should remember.

1. The Perfect Pull
There are many ways you can pull mobs. You can charge headfirst into them and start pounding, or you can shoot with a bow, or single target with one of your reaver dots.
Never pull with taunt. It might seem like a good idea, but taunt doesn't actually generate numerical threat. It is through damaging abilities and calls that you generate threat - so by all means pull with a reaver dot and THEN taunt (gives you 3 seconds of secure aggro during the time the mob spends pathing to you) but never taunt to pull. Sergeant's order is the only exception on trash mobs, as it pulls them to melee range and interrupts casts.

2. Always tank mobs AWAY from the healers and the rest of your party.

A typical group pull should look like this:

The circles are the mobs. The letters are Healer, Melee, Ranged and Tank respectively. The arrows/brackets show the direction the are facing. In an ideal world, the mobs should be facing the tank, and the rest of the group should be behind them. This is essential for a number of reasons:
- You must assume that all melee based mobs have a frontal cleave. Some do, some don't, but it's better to be safe than sorry. mobs with frontal cleave will kill the melee and even the ranged if they're close enough, and generally make life harder for the healers.
- Mobs can't block or parry from behind. Believe it or not, some mobs have knockdowns and abilities that are used following a block. if the mdps attacks from the front, they just add to the mob's parry chance, not only giving them a chance to parry your attacks (and not letting you or them reach full dps potential) but also adding to the number of times the mob will be able to use their "on parry" abilities if they have any.
Be aware that certain encounters require your party to stack up behind the boss you are tanking (any encounter which feautures "peeler" mobs that charge from you to someone else without breaking aggro) - for these fights, simply use the principle of making sure they are never in the mob's line of sight (unless you can say for sure that there is zero risk of cleaves).

3. Use Line of sight to your advantage when tanking casters. Casters cant fire at you when you're behind a wall. If you move behind a wall and break their line of sight (LOS) it forces them to close to melee range and get sucked into your maelstrom of AOE. You can pull mobs to melee range every 8 seconds with Sergeant's Order, but if you leave casters out in the open without dotting them or taunting them, chances are they wont stay on you and will aggro onto one of your ranged dps who has decided to have a pop at them. Even if you're using Main Assist on your MT and single targetting mobs down, a caster mob will eventually turn to a healer if no one attacks him - and that's bad news. Many mobs are immune to the death grip effects of Sergeant's order, so you need to use LOS to pull them to melee range. Situations like trash in Upper HK is where you can employ effective use of LOS.

4. When AOE tanking large groups of mobs, Switch targets to spread your dots around. To maximise your threat output while tanking more than 10 mobs, doing as much AOE as possible to more and more groups is the most effective way. If you only attack one mob, the 9 closest mobs will also get affected by dots. The other, however many, won't, so you need to switch to different mobs to apply a fresh round of diseases.

5. Interrupt whenever you can. This is a vital part of tanking, especially casters. Some mobs require you to interrupt dangerous casts (Such as Surging Riptide, Warboss Drak, Apostle of Jonaru, Iskaal or Beruhast) so you need to be mindful of these mobs, but even on standard trash packs, every 8 seconds you can interrupt a caster, and that's one spell you won't have to worry about.

6. Optimise your Rotation. its one thing to simply stand there and let mobs smack you, and another to do that whilst avoiding ground AOE, dodging waves, managing interrupts or purges and making sure nobody gets cleaved. Optimising your rotation and familiarising yourself with macros (see below) and their execution order allows you to focus on doing the harder aspects (interrupting, purging, moving and babysitting melee dps) without worrying too much about your rotation. Having said that, there are fights where the damage you take is less consequential and you can forget your rotation in favour of movement and interrupt execution (Grugonim, Darktide, Sicaron) and fights where your rotation is absolutely mandatory (Ituziel). I'll talk more about this later - but one of the best skills you can learn as a tank is how to optimise your rotation, so you aren't even thinking about it. Eventually, you will get to the stage where you don't even need to check your buff icons to know that your Call to Entrench runs out in 3 seconds - you just know it.

7. Assess the damage type for each encounter and your role within that encounter then decide on the most appropriate spec. Or alternatively, just read Riftstrats.

8. One of the most important things for any tank to be able to do is allow the group safety while letting them unleash full dps potential, and while the tank's dps is nothing to write home about (but you're a tank, you signed up for this!) they often carry abilities that either reduce armour (leader's mark, cutting distraction) or debuff the opponent so they will take more damage (spotter's order). Attacks that reduce armour or increase the damage that the mob takes are absolutely essental to group dps and the efficient killing of a mob. Lots of bosses have Enrage mechanics (Sicaron, Ituziel, Grugonim) where tank DPS aids can actually make the difference between success and failure.

9. If you lose aggro and a mob peels (goes for another player), then Taunt it back. The ammount of times i've done River of Souls with pugs and seen tanks just leave a lone mob to rampage over the healers and expect someone else to pick it up. Even if you do have a capabale offtank in your 20 man ROS pug that is destined for failure on Herald, don't expect him to pick up the peeled mob. If he does, great, but remember it's YOUR mob. You lost it, so it's your responsibility to get it back. And at the same time, you should watch in case a mob peels from your off tank. If he doesnt notice, then you'll have to take action. Be mindfull of your off tank. Be mindfull of where the mobs are. Then you eliminate one of the risks of wiping.

10. This is more of a moral and ethic of tanking, but remember what your job is. Your job isnt to charge in and deal as much dps as possible without any thought for consequence. Your job isnt to run in with a sword and shield and hit one mo for damage while the other three tear apart your group. Your job isnt to run away when your healer dies.
Your job is to keep everyone in your group safe by making sure that the mobs only attack you. If you're going to wipe, you need to stay behind and hold the mobs for as long as you can while the rest of your group try and get to safety. Your job is to take the lead responsibly in an instance.

Macros and Spec

The spec we will be using is 38 Reaver/8 Paladin/20 Warlord http://rift.zam.com/...o.EuqzhukI0k.-0

This spec is the one i generally use for tanking raid bosses, difficult raid trash and sometimes for dungeons. It has probably the most damage reduction that is available to you pre-4 pieces of HK. The jaw dropping unconditional 9% damage reduction from Binding of Death is what makes this shine. 15% damage reduction on a single target for 8 seconds every minute is also impressive - it can be used during phases of considerable burst damage or healer death, and you still retain Touch of Life for the "oh shit" moments. You can take 2 points out of Warlord and get rid of Promise of Steel and put it in Paladin if you don't wish to use this for tanking trash. I occasionally get threat issues with trash when i pug dungeons sometimes due to lack of charge and a strong pulling attack, i.e. Darkening Deeps can be a bit of a nightmare with this spec if you're pugging it and people don't stay close behind you. But other dungeons where trash is relatively static (such as Deepstrike Mines or Iron Tomb) allow this spec work much better.

When building macros, you need to put instant cast abilities with no cooldown at the bottom, and retaliation underneath them (so that it fires during Global Cooldown).
You need to keep these abilities up at ALL times:

Aggressive Block (15 sec) - on tank
Empowering Strike (15 sec)
Plague Bringer (12 sec) - on tank
Call to Entrench (18 sec) - on tank
Call to Battle (18 sec) - on tank

Soul sickness (12 sec) - on mobs
Blood fever (12/15sec) - on mobs
Necrotic wounds (15 sec) - on mobs
Pacifying Strike (15 sec) - on mobs
Spotters Order (20 sec) - on mobs (only if there is no CoJ or Illuminate)

So we need to find a way of reliably rotating these into macros.

1. Single target Builder Macro "Heroic Strike"

When you are out of melee range, NW/SS will fire and pull the mob (single target). In melee range, this will keep up Aggressive Block on you, and Soul Sickness (and +9% damage reduction as a byproduct) on the mob at all times. Between Soul Sickness, you will spam Pacifying strike/retaliation with this. Putting retaliation at the bottom ensures it will fire during GCD.

2. Single Target/AOE Builder

Exactly the same principle here, except this will rotate your 5 sec AOE threat generator abilities and ensure Soul Sickness and Blood Fever are always kept up. This is your all purpose builder - though you should hit your strictly Single Target builder for Aggressive Block priority, otherwise you could end up with a 1.5 - 3 second period without 10% block if you simply spam this macro and nothing else.

This finisher will ensure that there is a constant upkeep of your Warlord Crystal buff - 2% reduced incoming damage and 3% additional dodge chance for 12 seconds each time you use a call. The problem is, your calls have 15 sec cooldowns, so that's 6 seconds out of 30 where this buff isn't active. The only way to overcome that is to overlap Calls.
This rotation is VITAL. You are working on an 18 second second rotation that ensures constant upkeep of Empowering Strike, Call to Entrench and the Warlord Crystal Buffs.
Call to Entrench is a whopping 11% damage reduction on you for 18 seconds with 3 Aps - call to battle can be used with only one AP if just to activate the buff. This means you can incorporate Dire Blow and Empowering Strike into yourrotation. Hit this AFTER using a finisher to use Empowering Strike.

Assign your focus to a good DPSer who parses exceptional damage (such as Grimwart) and hit this for additional threat. You could even incorporate this into your builder macros. Normally we assign the lead melee DPS number 8 - this is the person the tanks should intercept.

Don't be alarmed by the presence of "cast @focus". If you don't have a focus target or your focus target is out of range, it will interrupt your current target. I first discovered this in Hammerknell, where I had to target Zilas, but interrupt imps that I wasnt targetting. I made a seperate macro that assigned the imps as my focus target and used that to interrupt them any time they moved to melee range. This is also useful for Apostles in Akylios phase 1. I can tank Jornaru and interrupt nearby apostles as well. In general, your focus target

6. Infestation
This doesn't need to be macroed - just use it to grant 15% reduced incoming damage against you.

ROTATION

Here's how I do my single target rotation - I i pull with Single Target Puller (or AOE puller if its a pack of mobs) hit my AOE builder three times and then hit my finisher. But I'm lazy, if you really want to optimise your rotation so you spend the minimum possible time without all of your temporary buffs on, you need to switch between both builders mid-rotation.

My aoe rotation is somewhat similar.

The whole time this is happening, Retaliation will most likely proc every six seconds from about 4.5 seconds onwards in between the 1.5 second GCD intervals, along with plague bringer.

This is an optimised rotatiion, and even then, its difficult to get things like pacifying strike kept on 100% of the time. As long as you can keep at least one disease (NW, BF, SS) on a mob and your warlord crystal buffs and calls on at all times - you can safely say you have an optimised rotation.

In case you haven't heard, me and Battal finally tied the knot after 7 years of being together.

OMG! OMG!

Those of you that we've played with for years know that Battal and i met in an online RPG 8 years ago and that after many hurdles and ups and downs i moved to Germany two years ago to live with him. Last year on 11.11.11 he proposed on my birthday, fresh out of hospital recovering from a surgery (talk about the perfect moment hehehe). I said yes.

The best Ranged DPS spec (out dps' MM by a huge amount) and should be used unless Interupts/Purges needed. Dont use the guide on the forum, writer fails!

Oddities I tell you!

We all know there is a load of strangeness that goes on in our world that is represented on-line. Some of it is quite eye opening. We have our community mp3 player where we share the sounds we listen to. I thought we could have a similar thread where we share interesting things that either make sense or do not make sense, are just plain unusual and/or are genuinely educational and inspiring. The focus would be on the positive and uplifting rather than anything else.

Target Macro - Might aide in the tank swaps

You have a few options with these sorts of macros. It might aide in the swap as you can just put the button on your bar instead of having to target the raid frames or mouseover. I am testing one out right now to see if it allows me to switch more fluidly.

I am composing this message to all of our healers within Rift. We all have room for improvement and growth, not only as individuals but as a team!!! I have been going through the parses and looking at the builds used and skills utilized within those builds. Also, I have watched the replay of the fight and have noticed a few things.

First off , we do not seem to be utilizing our Cool Downs appropriately. We should be using our CD's primarily when the tank is under the 50% healing reduction from the flame de-buff. We seem to be loosing our tanks not on the Word of Incineration swaps but during the mid-phase brimstone fissure + wave de-buff portion of the tanking phase (for a lack of better terms).

Also, our support healers each have emergency heals or some sort of man heal within their builds that they could pop on in order to aide with the tank not becoming a pancake. Please help out if you see the tank is nearing the danger zone of death, don't just focus on raid heals if at all possible.

Once we get down to the 35% mark the healing is going to increase raid wide so we all need to work together in order to achieve our goal in killing this boss before it gets nerfed. Through everyone's hard work and effort we will prevail. I really appreciate your understanding and assistance with this fight! Keep up the good work and hang in there!!!! We will over-come this together...
